BUT WHAT IF??

Don’t let your new year begin with these three crippling words keeping you from the success you deserve. Those three words are ‘but what if?’

As a Christian I know what the Bible says regarding worrying. Matthew 6:34 says, “The worries of the day are sufficient for the day. Don’t worry about tomorrow as tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” Yet, the human part of me finds me saying, “but what if?” when I get an idea or thought that is different from my normal day to day thoughts and actions.

If you are like me you can look back on times in your life when you wanted to step out and take a chance and then those three little words popped into your head and BAM you didn’t give it a try.

This year try to remember that it is okay to try and fail because you can try again! Want to learn a new language? Don’t listen to the naysayers who will tell you that you are too old. Want to get that degree you never finished? Head to the college and talk to someone about what is involved and then step out and go for it. Things may not be easy or go smoothly but worthwhile things rarely are do.

Imagine how many medical inroads might have been made already if the seeds of opportunity had not died in the ground because some one thought, ‘but what if?’ How much more technology would be available today in all fields of our lives if the thoughts had not died on the vine because someone thought, ‘but what if?’

Those three words are often the result of the fear we have of being mocked or not being successful in front of our family and peers. This year let us try to throw the fear, that keeps us from achieving everything that God has put into our grasp, into a deep hole never to be seen again.

Human ingenuity is one of God’s greatest gifts to us. However, it can’t be achieved fully if we don’t step out and do whatever we can do live our lives to our fullest potential. Is it always easy? No, of course not but we need to keep pushing forward. If we didn’t we would still be living in the Dark Ages.

Look at Marie Curie. She was a woman in a field totally dominated by men and yet she didn’t let society stop her or tell her to “stay her lane.” Due to her facing all those difficulties she went on to advance medical science through her discoveries in radiation.

Louis Pasteur ignored the laughter and mockery when he tried to educate people on the value of vaccinations, pasteurizing milk and other techniques to prevent disease. Both Pasteur and Curie are responsible for saying millions of lives.

These are just two examples. Most of us will not make that kind of world wide impact but if all of us made a positive impact, even a small one, in our family or community maybe that would be the seed someone needs to make a mighty impact.

So, if you are looking to make a New Years Resolution, how about deciding to not let those three words, ‘but what if?’ run your life this year.

Happy New Years to all of my family and friends!!

Sanitize History Or Learn From It?

When I taught American History I always reminded my students to not superimpose on past times what we know now. This is the best country in the world but we are not now, nor were we ever perfect but this newest idea of sanitizing history is wrong on so many levels.

I was in Germany recently and this issue was in the forefront. Germany does not have a First Amendment right of free speech. If you deny the Holocaust, make the Hitler salute etc. you can be arrested and serve up to three years in prison. They make their students take at least one field trip to a former concentration camp. I am not saying that I agree with their first amendment stand but I do agree that you learn from the past and trying to pretend it didn’t happen is not effective. They are embarrassed by what Hitler did and they work at making sure nothing like it happens again.

In my American History class we discussed the changes in this country regarding issues such as slavery, women’s rights, children’s rights, worker’s rights etc. There have been many positive changes in this country and I get sick to death listening to people beating the drums of slavery, and women’s rights issues especially when it is a constant refrain on what had been and not on what is the reality today.

Yes, slavery was wrong, and is a horrible stain on our country’s past, however, it ended over 150 years ago. Yes, I know that things didn’t improve over night for black people but now opportunity is there for anyone who wants to go for the ‘brass ring.’ When people talk about reparations for black people because of slavery I am dumbfounded. Who pays this money and who gets it? There are no former slaves. I did some research, not in depth, but a cursory one did not show any grandchildren of slaves that are still alive. So, I repeat – who pays and who receives the money. Let’s make it even more interesting by reminding people that white people were not the only slave owners. For instance in 1850 42% of free blacks in Charleston, S. Carolina owned slaves and of that 42% 64% were women! Do all blacks get money including those whose families arrived here after the Civil War? Do all whites pay even those whose relatives arrived after the Civil War? The politicians who are promoting this make me sick as they are pandering for votes and have no interest in how this would impact the country at large.

Now, we have people demanding that all statues, plaques etc. should be removed that honor anyone on the Confederate side during the Civil War. Yes, some owned slaves but remember what I said about superimposing what we know now on past times. The men they want to eliminate from public view were honorable men who fought for what they thought was right at that time. It would take a book to describe the type of men they were and how, despite the wrong choices regarding slavery, they made positive impacts on our country’s history.

Here are my, never to be humble, opinions on this. First off, let us remember that no profession is free of bad employees. There are bad police officers, doctors, teachers and on and on. If one commits a crime or breaks the rules go after that person but don’t penalize the entire professional community. For instance, people need to remember that without police all we would have is anarchy. If you want an idea on what that looks like check out Portland, Oregon today.

Second, let us learn from history; not dwell on it ad nauseam. Let us emphasize how far we have come in this country in regards to positive changes. You don’t like a mural because you feel it reflects too much on a time that wasn’t as positive as today? How about not covering it up but painting another and putting it side by side to show the inroads that have been made?

How about encouraging our young people of all races and ethnic backgrounds to show respect for all our First Responders and members of the military? Instead of telling our young people how unfair life is why don’t we have teachers and mentors who are showing them all the opportunities this country offers? If we spent as much time teaching our young people the importance of education, marriage ( the basis of all successful cultures) and living your life with the goal of having a positive impact on your community we might find ourselves living in a far more positive environment. The money that is spent fighting for the rights of our young women to have abortions should make everyone with a soul sick.

Let’s get back to politicians like President Kennedy who said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.” We have a slew of politicians trying to out do each other on how many free things people will get if they vote for them. How about talking about what people can do to make this country better for everyone? How about a politician who talks about a program like AmeriCorp? AmeriCorp was started under President Clinton (Kennedy and Clinton – both Democrats I might point out) and was one of several national volunteer organizations.

My last thought is that we need to bring back shame. I don’t mean to the degree that people are put into hiding if they make a mistake in judgement but today we have women bragging about their abortions!! You can check the news any day and get the intimate details of the sex lives of celebrities. The more abhorrent the better. There was a time in this country that a show like Jerry Springer would never have been on the air because no one would have aired their family issues in such a manner.

I think we can learn from the Germans on the issue of the past. Don’t relive it; learn from it!

A Trip Into The Past

For many years I wanted to take a trip that covered major battles of W.W.II. My Father had been D Day 17 which means that when he landed the fighting had gone to the hedgerows. It was bloody fighting and it would be nearly ten more weeks before Normandy was fully declared as in Allied control.

When I decided last year that it was time to take this trip as it was now the 75th Anniversary of D Day I began my research. It wasn’t long before I chose Beyond Band of Brothers. Their organization seemed, and I was correct, to be the most organized regarding their trips. I chose the nine day trip that went from Normandy to Munich and I am super pleased with my choice. Our Tour Manager was Sue Kormendy. She was organized and knowledgeable. She arranged for us to have specific guides for the areas we covered. These guides were extremely knowledgeable and enriched the experience. Their enthusiasm was contagious and really helped to amplify the visit. I did not go on this trip alone but took my 18 year old Grandson, Jacob. The guides were so good that even he commented on the fact that although some aspects were boring to him that there was enough other things to look at that he was never bored. That says a lot! Jacob was right because to be honest I don’t care how the engine in the tank works but that was okay because others in the trip did care and I could drift over to something else to look at that did interest me.

When I signed up for the trip I was disappointed that the trip did not include Paris so I added a two day rider so that Jacob and I could see some of the main sights. It was great to point out to Jacob the Arch de Triumph that the Allies had marched through when they liberated Paris. I reminded him that my Father, his Great Grandfather, marched through it. The Louvre, well, it is hard to explain how you could spend weeks there and not see everything. It was really exciting to see the Mona Lisa and other cultural artifacts that we read about all the time, like the Venus De Milo. The history of the Eiffel Tower was really interesting as well and going up made our day. Sadly, we could only see the outside of Notre Dame but the guide’s information on the history of the Cathedral was enriching. We did go into a smaller cathedral which is next to Notre Dame. It is St. Chapelle and it is world renowned for its stain glass. It was like being inside a jewel. Sadly, we didn’t feel the warm friendliness toward Americans in Paris that we would experience in Northern France.

When I signed up for the trip I had no idea of the emotions I would feel when I stood on the beach, Omaha, that my Father had landed on over 75 years ago. Jacob was a little upset that people were having picnics and romping in the water. He said it didn’t seem right. I explained to him that the allies landed and eventually liberated France so that future generations could live normal lives. Everywhere you went were reminders of the price American’s paid for the residents. People would ask you if you had a relative that fought in the war and when you answered, “yes”, they would thank you.

The trip included St. Mere Eglese, if you saw the movie the Longest Day it is the village where John Steele parachutes in and gets caught on the church steeple. To this day they have a parachute and a dummy to show what happened to honor the sacrifice. We also spent time in Bastogne, Belgium which was the center for the Battle of the Bulge. We saw fox holes that are original and are maintained by the community. The people of Bastogne have not forgotten the sacrifice of the Americans either. We went to the American Cemetery in Normandy and there were more than a few damp eyes as the flag was lowered as Taps was played. We also went to the American Cemetery in Luxemburg and saw General Patton’s grave site. The trip also included numerous sites in Munich which was the city where a lot of Hitler’s insane planning was done. The Eagle’s Nest was included and having been there before I was super excited that Jacob would see it and go up and see the view from the top which is over 6,000 feet and is located in the Alps. It was built for Hitler so a lot of evil was planned there but now it is a place of beauty. The actual houses that Hitler and his insane minions lived in were destroyed but thankfully the main building was spared. The same elevator that took Hitler up to the top takes tourists up. Yes, the elevator is maintained and has been upgraded. One member of our group was very concerned about that. There is a lovely restaurant up at the top and you can eat and enjoy the view. The most emotionally draining stop was at Dachau, the former concentration camp. The attitude of everyone on the tour was altered; as it should be when seeing the remains of such evil. I have always been annoyed by the fools that compare the detention centers for the illegal immigrants to concentration camps but my annoyance is now flown blown anger after seeing a camp and walking through the horror. In between these main stops we drove through numerous small villages and towns that were liberated one at a time, 75 years ago.

The trip was both a personal one for me as I wanted to see where my Father had landed and walk where he had walked but it also fed my love of history. To see places that you have read about it always exciting. As a Christian I love entering churches that were built hundreds of years ago and saying a prayer. The church in St. Mere Eglese was started in 1140!! Sharing the trip with my grandson was the cherry on top.

If you have a love of history especially W.W.II then I highly recommend Beyond Band of Brothers. They have a wide variety of trips that cover various aspects and battles of the war.

2nd Chronicles 7:14

” If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. “

This is an important passage in the Bible and we need to remember it, especially now. Before I get into that more I want to give a brief history lesson.

We are the only country in the history of the world to have a revolution that wasn’t followed by another revolution or a coup. Then we become the only country in the history of the world to have a Civil War and not have it followed by a revolution or a coup. Think about that for a minute. What a blessed country we live in and that is because God has had His hand of this awesome country.

Now, think about countries like Afghanistan where the tribes have been fighting each other for thousands of years and it is still on going. Their hate for each other keeps them from having a productive first world country. Then think about the fact that less than eighty years after the Civil War Southern boys and Northern boys fought together to end Nazism and Imperial Japan!!

Keep in mind that most people didn’t move far from where they were born through out their lives up until WWII. After the men went to war the women moved all over the country to take the jobs working in the industries that kept the war supplied. You had Southern and Northern women working side by side. They helped with each other’s children and were there to comfort the wives who got the call that they all feared. When the war ended their men joined them and now families, that prior to the war would never have met, let alone lived in harmony with each other, began to create the neighborhoods that would become the new back bone of our country. Oh, there were still issues. Some Southerners still felt the Civil War was just in a pause and there were Northerners who looked down on Southerners . The Civil Rights movement began and finally the last vestiges of inequality would begin to melt away. It would not be an easy journey but America showed once again that it can do anything.

The bottom line is that no country will be or continue to be successful if it did not start with the Judeo/Christian principals we did and then continued to fight for equality for everyone. Keep in mind that we have helped to free from tyranny over a billion people!!

The United States is not perfect but our goal since the conception of this country was to give as fair a playing field as possible to its citizens. This was based on the principles which the Bible teaches. Our Founding Fathers built our Constitution based on Judeo/Christian principles. If you don’t believe that or you question this statement I suggest you purchase the Founder’s Bible. This Bible intersperses the beliefs of our Founding Fathers with letters, speeches and other documents from that time. It also quotes leaders from past the time of the creating of the Constitution which again shows the belief system of these leaders. I know, I know – many of our Founding Fathers owned slaves and slavery is an awful stain on our history but look what we have accomplished despite that stain. What other country had thousands upon thousands of their own citizens fight and die to free those slaves?

We have gone so far a drift from those principles and it is scary. For most of our history students were taught who God was and even public schools opened with a prayer. It was generic and didn’t mention any particular denomination. If they were being raised by Atheists, which was rare then, they could stand quietly or go to the office. Students were raised to honor those who served in the military. They stood and put their right hand over their heart when the flag went by them. They honored first responders. They honored and were respectful of their elders. They were taught please and thank you. They were taught that communities work best when everyone respects the rights and belongings of others. They were taught that hard work was the way to a successful life and that expecting others to pay your way was not acceptable.

Now, we have people who actually want to be the president of the United States fighting for the right to abort a baby right up until the moment of birth! These same people are pushing for free health care, free college education, free housing and no borders which can keep us a sovereign nation! Everything that was good about this country is being crushed under a torrent of evil that is being pushed on us by people with no moral compass and that means they do not have God controlling their lives. All these people want is power and we truly need to fear people like that.

We need a revival in this country! We all need to remember 2nd Chronicles 7:14 and we need to pray for God to keep his hand on this country and we all need to pray hard.

Fifty Genders And Counting? What?

I want to start this article out by saying that there are two, just two, genders. If you aren’t sure which you are then I suggest you take your clothes off and stand in front of a full length mirror. You have boy parts or girls parts. There you go. Problem solved. What you do with those parts is up to you.

According to an article I saw on line there are now more than 50 genders that have been identified by people. Who these people are I don’t know but I assume they are very whacky people who are laughing as they suck people into their very warped vortex.

We have always had cross dressers and trans people but they were rare and far between because they are rare. The problem is we have allowed a small part of our populace to try and change the gender roles as they have been, and note worked, since God made Adam. It is now “cool” to be trans. We have parents who think their child is trans if they even breath a thought that these parents think is an indicator of a trans issue. A girl that decides to play with a truck or a boy who wants to put on his mom’s nail polish. Then we have the other side of the coin. We now have states that are allowing minors to bypass their parents who say no to hormone therapy or surgery. These are decisions that can forever alter a minor’s life but that doesn’t matter to these extremists. We don’t allow these same minors to vote, buy cigarettes or alcohol or get a drivers license but these idiots think these young people know what they want sexually from their still developing brains. The suicide rate among people who have made these changes and later regret it is far above the rate for the general populace.

Thank God President Trump over turned the trans rules for the military. The military has a job and that job is to protect the United States and its territory and sometimes that is accomplished through violence. It is NOT a social experiment. On top of that you have people joining so they can get free sex change surgery which we as tax payers would pay. Oh, just a heads up to anyone reading this who is considering this type of surgery – parts don’t work like the original model does.

I am appalled that people think it is okay to have a man take part in female sports and then when they win act as though it was a fair event. What the heck!! Then we have municipalities that allow men to go into female bathrooms if they feel they identify as female. A guy doing that should have it explained to him that the only thing he is going to identify as is seriously injured if he doesn’t turn his butt around and go to the men’s room. The number of sexual assaults on women and girls is up drastically in female restrooms. Guess why?

We have cases recently of women who have decided they are men and then give birth. They actually announce that a man gave birth. No, a woman dressed as a man gave birth. Morons!! In case you forgot middle school biology only females with the requisite parts can give birth. No exceptions!!

I am not even going to spend time on these other genders because to be honest with you I don’t understand most of them. I do know that is now cool for young people to claim to be bi-sexual. I sure don’t get that. For goodness sake, pick a team!

My bottom line is this – I don’t care what you do with your body but do not demand that the rest of us change our mores and customs to meet your needs. If you want to live outside the norm and yes, male and female together is the accepted norm, then don’t be surprised if most people are not accommodating. And please quit throwing your decisions in our faces. This country was based on Judeo/Christian values and the foundation for that was the nuclear family with the extended family as the backup. This country did pretty well with that foundation and I fear that God will take his hand off of this wonderful and awesome country if we don’t get back on track. Let us start by putting God back in public schools and as for colleges, well, it is time for alumni to stop giving money to colleges that cater to those who want to be different for the sake of being different. We need to use our pocket books to stop supporting Hollywood that wants to push this nonsense in our faces.

One of the major issues is that too many people think it is wrong to stand up and say, “Enough” to what is going on in our society. As a Christian I am not judging anyone as that is not my job. I am, however, going to fight for the country that I want my grandchildren to live in and it is not the one people who claim there are over 50 genders is trying to create.

Hawaii – Worth the trip?

I want to start out by saying that it was thrilling to go to Hawaii because it was my 50th state. I had spent time in all of the other 49 so this trip was special for me and my daughter Sara as it was her 50th also.

I also want to state that there are some beautiful sights to see in Hawaii that you won’t see in any of the other states. The people were very warm and friendly. Sadly, the cost of living in this beautiful state is off the charts. In fact a new report from the federal government showed that Hawaii has the lowest bang for a buck in the Nation. A dollar is only worth 84 cents. New York it is 86 cents, California, 87 cents and the District of Columbia 86 cents. Please note these are some of the most liberal states in the United States and they have the highest homelessness, residents leaving the state as well as all kinds of benefits for illegal immigrants. In my state, Georgia, a dollar is worth $1.09. That is a big difference when you start to figure the difference on a hundred thousand dollars.

However, the Department of Tourism and television shows do not show the real Hawaii. You see the real Hawaii is much more depressing than I ever imagined. Instead of paying over $200.00 a person to be carted around some of the cities we rented a car and went on our own. GPS is awesome!! This meant we were able to go off the established routes that were given to us and see the real Hawaii. There were miles of roads with the most abject housing you can imagine. Some of it looked third world level. In fact, areas that had been hit by the lava from the eruption last year were obliterated. When I asked a gentleman if all this raised the price of homeowners insurance, such as what happened in Florida after the hurricanes, he said no. I was surprised and he explained to me that most of the houses were built without permits and as such didn’t qualify for insurance. I was dumbfounded. He said that a lot of people live in unpermitted houses. It raised the fire concern but since they don’t qualify for insurance it doesn’t affect everyone else. I guess the neighbors and first responders don’t count. We were stunned at this fact. I never saw these sections of Hawaii while watching Hawaii 5 O. Guess they don’t want to share those areas with their TV audience.

The number of homeless people shocked us. I know this is a serious problem in numerous cities throughout the country but for some reason didn’t expect to see the number I did in Hawaii. I was told that some are homeless because of cut backs in benefits and options for the mentally ill but that in a lot of cases it is because of drugs and the high cost of housing which has forced many to the streets. As a Conservative I feel compelled to point out that Hawaii, like Los Angeles and most other cities with these same issues is run by Liberals.

I am curious if the state has a Board of Health. Restaurants only show passed or failed on their certificates. I can’t help but wonder if they passed by a hair or was their place squeaky clean? Bathrooms everywhere were filthy and I mean everywhere. Even nicer restaurants had you thinking of the worse truck stop you had ever been to in your life.

Speaking of restaurants we were stunned at the cost of eating out. Eating a lunch at an establishment on par with, say, Applebee’s or Chili’s was off the charts. Lunch for three easily came in at $80 to $100 by the time you added drinks and taxes. A burger meal at a fast food establishment that would cost you roughly $7.00 on the main land can cost you $10.00 or more in Hawaii. Speaking of the high cost of living; I understand that everything has to be carted in but the added taxes are ridiculous and make everything extremely high priced.

If you and a mate or significant other are thinking about moving to Hawaii, think again. If you make seventy five thousand dollars on the mainland that same amount of money will have you living in what people on the mainland refer to as slum conditions. Most people work two or even three jobs just to make ends meet and they will never own their own home.

Now, please understand that I would love to see an industrial use for old plastic bags. Since no one has come up with one I am all for eliminating them, however, in Hawaii this is a major concern and I mean major. Not, the homeless, the high cost of living, people living in fire traps etc. but the plastic bags is their top priority. Due to this concern you can not get plastic or paper bags. They will, however, sell you canvas bags for anywhere from $3.99 to $7.99 unless you bring one with you.

Was the cruise to Hawaii worth it? Yes, the sights are beautiful. However, keep an open mind regarding what they will tell you is paradise. Avoid most of the side trips from the cruise. Rent a car for excursions that are basically a bus trip that will cost you dearly per person. In places where there are several sights being shown use the Hop On Hop Off option. These are buses that cost $20 a day per person and go to the same places the $200 or more person cruise bus is going to stop at. You won’t mind as much the high cost of many of the water activities if you haven’t paid through your teeth just to get to the location. Try to eat as often as possible on the ship. When you are gone for the day you will see people handing out coupons for specials or buy one get one meals at very nice places. When signing up for the cruise ask the cruise line if they are offering any specials that include free air fare from California to Hawaii and back as well as free nights in hotels in Hawaii.

If you or a loved one is confined to a wheel chair you will find the islands are not very wheel chair accessible. This is mainly because the islands are made of volcanic material and roads and sidewalks are very rocky.

If I won a contest and it was a week cruise and I had to choose between Alaska and Hawaii my choice would be Alaska hands down. That said I would like to go back to Oahu for a couple of days as I didn’t get to go to Pearl Harbor or some of the other sites on that Island. Then back to the main land as I sure can’t afford “paradise” as the local’s keep calling their state.

How Did We Manage?

How in the world did we manage to turn out to be a pretty successful generation when we didn’t have school lunches that were provided by the Federal Government? I assure you that the parents back then did not think anyone else was responsible for feeding their children. We lived on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bologna sandwiches, apples, cookies and a few other variations and we turned out to be a pretty strong generation. Now, we are paying taxes to provide not just lunch to students but breakfast and after school snacks!! What is going on? How did this happen? The government made inroads during the Great Depression when the government bought excess crops from farmers to help them and to feed poor children. Okay, who wouldn’t agree to that but over the years, just like any government endeavor, it grew and is now a monster. As tax payers we have the right to complain but sadly we become complacent and that is never good.

How did we manage with just one TV in the house and it was black and white. No color back then, folks. We never paid attention to that because our imagination saw the color. Plus, only three channels to choose from. It was a big deal when public TV gave us a forth channel. A good time was had by all when someone would be moving the rabbit ears around to try and get a better picture and the rest of the people in the room would be hollering out advice. I occasionally catch myself looking for something to watch, and that is a choice from hundreds of channels, and then I make the comment, accompanied by a heavy sigh, that there is nothing on. Yes, I have become a bit spoiled too. We managed back then because we were outside more with our friends or we read books.

I am as dependent on my cell phone as most people today and I wonder just how we managed with only one phone in the house. It was usually black and you often had to share the line with a neighbor. This was called a party line and trust me it was no party when you wanted to make a call and couldn’t because someone was talking and talking and wouldn’t hang up. We didn’t know where people were every minute of the day nor did we get regaled with pictures of everyone else’s lunches etc. during the day and we managed just fine. If you wanted to make a long distance call you had to dial the operator and explain where you wanted to call. She would then call you back when a line was free. It could be a couple of hours. Now, we can call all over the world from a phone the size of a pack of cards. The real problem as I see it is that people are too connected to their phones and don’t socialize with other people. Who hasn’t been to a restaurant lately and looked around to see tables full of people and they are looking at their phones and not each other? Technology should not take over our lives as life is far too short to allow that to happen.

How did we manage without ‘fast food?’ We ate the majority of our meals at home. In the summer time there were the hot dog and ice cream stands that were open for a couple of months but other than those the option to eat out was a restaurant and eating out was an occasional treat. I was raised in Tonawanda, New York. This is a city between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Our restaurants reflected the ethnic background of the citizens. We had a German, polish and Italian restaurants for the most part. On Fridays a lot of restaurants offered fish fries as there was a large Roman Catholic population and the Church at that time said you shouldn’t eat meat on Fridays. Fish fries were very popular and you found a lot of non-Catholics filling up the restaurants on Fridays along with Catholics. However, eating out was a treat and not a weekly event. Today the selection for fast food is varied but we must be cautious as I don’t know of any fast food that is really as nutritious as a home made meal.

How did we manage before Google? Today if you are chatting with someone and the question of when did John Wayne die comes up all you have to do is grab your smart phone and google the question. We actually had to wait until we could get to the library and check for the information. Now, random information, financial transactions, current news etc. are only a click away. Sadly, so is war. During W.W.II people had to wait a couple of days to hear about a battle on the radio and to see any coverage meant going to the movie theater where it was shown before the scheduled movie. In the 1960’s when Viet Nam flared up you could see the coverage the next day. Now, we can see battles practically as they are being fought. In my opinion it makes real war seem like a TV show or a movie instead of the reality of the horrors of war. Although a lot of aspects regarding getting information quickly are good this one particular issue I have negative feelings about.

How did we manage, as girls, when we could only wear skirts to school and the hem had to be below the knee! Now, keep in mind that I grew up in Western New York where the winters could be brutal. You could wear pants under the skirt to get to school and there they had to be taken off. That rule changed a year or so after I graduated. It was sensible to change the rule but then, like a lot of changes, it went down hill. I am happy that I don’t have children in public schools today because from what I can see it is now okay to come to school half naked. I don’t care what feminists say about temptation being a two way street blah, blah, blah. The bottom line is that teenage boys are not really fully human. They are basically hormones covered with skin and to see so much flesh is down right distracting when you are trying to get those young men to learn Chemistry or Algebra. Plus, what happened to teaching young women to have modesty? Very little is left to the imagination these days. I also see where the students are running the schools and everybody seems concerned about their feelings and their rights. Trust me when I tell you that nobody cared about our feelings or rights and again I want to emphasize that we turned out, for the most part, as a strong, successful generation.

Yes, we managed back then. We didn’t know we had it tough. You don’t miss what you never had. On the plus side we depended on each other more and appreciated what we did have. I don’t see much appreciation these days but I do see and hear a lot of people complaining that they don’t have the newest gadget and their lives won’t be fulfilled until they do have it. I have thought about this and I honestly don’t remember ever thinking, when I was young, that my life would be more fulfilled, in some manner, if I only had a new gadget. Seems to me we managed just fine back then but today, not so much.

It Never Grows Old

I have hesitated writing this post because I didn’t want anyone to think I am looking for emotional stroking. I am not!! However, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it when someone says that I look younger than I am. What woman wouldn’t enjoy that and believe me when I say that hearing it never grows old. It hit me the other day when I was out and a younger woman asked me if I had a secret cream that I use or did I have a face lift. I have not had a face lift and you will see pigs fly by your kitchen window before you will hear about me letting a doctor unhitch my face and yank it up. Just the thought gives me the heebee geebees. However, this was not the first time a younger woman had asked so I decided to give some insight that I have gleaned on this topic to young women.

Genetics are a factor regarding the aging process but this article is about the behavior that we have absolute control over.

We all want to look younger, and more energetic as we get older. If you are a young woman and know that is how you will want age then it is time to take the steps now to ensure that you will look younger and be more energetic.

Begin now to eat healthy. Occasional junk food is okay but don’t make it the core of your diet. Do not make soda pop your fall back drink. It leads to dehydration which dries the skin out. Make water your fall back drink.

Next, I want to stress to young women to not be a sun magnet. We all need more Vitamin D as this country now has an epidemic of people not getting enough Vitamin D because of the use of sun screens. What I am saying is always get 15 to 30 minutes of sun a few times a week but the rest of the time use a sun screen with at least an SPF of 30. We all know that the damage that too much sun can do to your skin can lead to skin cancer but it also leads to the brown spots and broken blood vessels that can be seen on the face, as well as other parts of the body, of people who bake in the sun. There are some treatments for long term sun damage but they are expensive and do not replace l skin that has been allowed to age naturally. If you don’t tan naturally you weren’t mean to and all you do is damage your skin and increase your chances for skin cancer when you roast in the sun.

Smoking is the next issue regarding your face. We all know about the dangers of lung cancer but rarely does anyone mention what it does to your face. According to the Mayo Clinic smoking is a major cause of facial wrinkling. The nicotine in cigarettes leads to a narrowing of the blood vessels in the outer layer of the skin. The narrowing impairs blood flow to your skin which keeps the skin from getting the oxygen and important nutrients such as Vitamin A. The chemicals in tobacco smoke damage the collagen and elastin in your skin leading to early sagging of the skin. This paragraph alone should lead to cigarettes being put out left, right and center.

I am not against an occasional adult beverage but I drink alcohol rarely. I drink mainly water and water is the best fluid for your skin. Water helps to rid the body of toxins and that is always good for your skin. Too much alcohol leads to altered blood flow to the skin. That means the widening of capillaries and then the breaking of the capillaries which leads to those broken capillaries being obvious on the face. The dehydration that alcohol causes also leads to the sagging of skin.

We have all known older people who just don’t have a very happy demeanor. Their face often reflects that. Having a positive attitude and joyful spirit are essential to all aspects of our lives including our faces. Dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are all released when we smile. Some physicians even say that smiling can lower blood pressure and heart rate. Even during times of trouble we can all find something to smile about.

The woman I spoke to the other day asked me if I had a special concoction that I put on my face. I had to smile because it was such a simple answer. No, I have used Pond’s Moisturizing cream morning and night for over 45 years. I am sure there are other good moisturizers on the market but it is the one I prefer. I think moisturizing your face is essential. I also use a facial cleanser that gently exfoliates. I also use a liquid foundation with an SPF of 30. Nothing fancy or expensive.

To all the young women who read this I wish you all a long and prosperous life as you age gracefully and naturally. And truth be told – It never grows old to be told you look younger than you are!

The Good Old Days? Really?

I hear people my age constantly bemoaning that life was so much better during the “Good Old Days.” I think, “Really?” I believe this statement deserves some serious consideration because in my opinion this is partly true but certainly not totally true.

Let’s look at one aspect of the “Good Old Days.” Neighbors knew each other. In the evening people sat on their front porches or stoops and then went back and forth visiting and discussing their day. Everyone knew the names of everyone else’s children and no one threatened a lawsuit if a neighbor yelled at another neighbor’s child because they were doing something they shouldn’t. Sadly, because we have become such a litigious society people are afraid to get involved even if they see something dangerous and most people today don’t even know their neighbor’s names let alone their children’s names. My husband had been dead three months when I bumped into a neighbor at the mail box and she asked how he was doing since she hadn’t seen him on the porch in a while. I told her and she acted all upset but part of me wanted to tell her that when I was young the neighbor would have gone over to see how someone was, when they hadn’t seen them in a few days, and asked if there was anything they could do. Yes, in this case the ‘good old days’ win.

The Woman’s movement, in my never to be humble opinion, has done more to hurt women than to help them. It was started to assist women in being treated fairly in the work place and regarding domestic violence and now it is a left wing organization that only supports women with a leftist mentality. When I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, over 50 years ago, I was working at a government office. I was told that once I started to show that I couldn’t work the front window because it wasn’t acceptable for the public to see a pregnant woman. That was ridiculous but it was the way it was and a lot of people fought to make working conditions for women fairer and better. If you were an abused wife, and didn’t have family to fall back on, well, unless you got lucky and got a sympathetic police officer and judge you were pretty much up a barrel so to speak. So, in these situations the ‘good old days’ weren’t so good.

When I was growing up the term civil rights was not a big part of our lexicon. Racial discrimination was rampant. I laugh when people tell me that since I grew up in the North I wouldn’t understand. Trust me it was just as bad up there as it was in the South. I think we can all agree that the country has improved since equality under the law is for people of all colors. Now, we just need to convince people to take advantage of the opportunities this great country gives to people and quit reliving our ugly past. So, once again, the ‘good old days’ don’t look so good.

I remember being terrified that the Russians would bomb us as we were in school and we wouldn’t be able to get home. Bomb drills were a part of our school routine. When I went to Russia I was stunned to meet people my age who told me they had had the same drills because they were told the American’s were coming. No one went anywhere and all that was accomplished was terrifying children. Now, it is violence of another kind in our schools. I could go on and on as to why I think students are coming to school with the intent to do harm to other students but the bottom line is we still have scared students. So, on this issue I think it is a wash regarding the ‘good old days.’

You hear people all the time talking about the high cost of products today. Yes, there was penny candy back in the ‘good old days’ but remember the average, yearly median income for a family in 1960 was $5600.00. Thanks to the GI Bill most people owned a home and the majority of homes had a stay at home mom. Now, many families have both people working and in many cases just to make ends meet and they bring home a whole lot more than $5600.00. I do want to point out one fact that many people don’t want to acknowledge. Back in the ‘good old days’ people didn’t have credit cards. They lived within their means. You didn’t need a Dave Ramsey like we do today. On the other hand we have a much broader selection of life styles to choose from because of technology today. People work in fields that didn’t exist 50 years ago. As a child I had never had a mango or a kiwi. Now thanks to refrigerated trucks I can have one any time I want to purchase one. No one I knew flew to Europe. To be honest no one I knew had flown anywhere. Today air travel is not only for the rich. On this issue I have to say the ‘good old days’ take second place although the ‘good old days’ were ahead regarding credit and money management.

I have mentioned couple of times about so many women working outside the home today. Looking back at the ‘good old days’ most women were at- home moms. Yes, that was nice but not for all families. There were families that had a mom who was frustrated that she couldn’t pursue the interest or talent that she possessed. She was expected to stay home. Anyone with even half a brain can attest to the important roles women have played in our economy over the past few decades. However I find it sad that today many woman want to stay home and raise their children and can’t. The reasons vary from having gotten caught up in the pursuit of bigger and better toys, being a single mom or maybe a ill husband. What ever the reason, what really makes me angry is the way working women look down at an at- home mom or how the at- home moms looks down at the working mom. Isn’t the Woman’s Movement supposed to encourage us to do what we want to do? Aren’t other women supposed to support and respect our decision? However, because of the inroads made, women can now pursue their interests. That is why many new discoveries in medicine and technology, to name just two fields, have been made by women and never would have if we had stayed in the mentality of the ‘good old days.’ So, in this regard I think the ‘good old days’ don’t look so good especially if you are a woman.

In the ‘good old days’ entertainment was made so that the entire family could watch the show or listen to the music together. I am not sure exactly when it happened, as it was insidious, but today entertainment is something that you really have to evaluate carefully. In the ‘good old days’ shows about families always had strong father figures not the inept fools that are on most shows today. In fact, the only exception that I can think of is Blue Bloods where Tom Selleck plays a patriarch who is a stable father figure with strong values and ethics and expects the same from the members of his family. It doesn’t help that we hear all the time that men aren’t important and that being a single mom is cool. After all, the sit com’s on TV promote that constantly. The promotion of sex with multiple partners, adultery etc. is rampant and our young people have to be reminded if they watch such shows that they do not reflect the reality of life. In this case the ‘good old days’ win hands down.

“If it feels good; do it” This was not an expression that you heard when I was growing up in the ‘good old days.’ It started to be part of the culture in the late 60’s when I was a teenager. In the ‘good old days’ you were taught to think of the ramifications of your actions. You were taught to be respectful of others and to hold police, fireman, clergy and military members in high regard. If a teacher was wrong on an issue you took it home and your parents checked it out. If it was matter of you being rude, well, that was taken care of at home. Today we have members of Congress actually saying that the police are the enemy of the people. Service men are made fun of for serving or called ‘baby killers.’ In California a law was just passed that said you can’t suspend a student for rude or disruptive behavior. I guess in California they don’t care that the student who wants to get an education can’t because of the disruptive students. We have a generation of parents telling their children nothing is their fault and that they are just victims. In the ‘good old days’ parents explained to their children that although they were special to them; they were not special in the scheme of the world. They were expected to work for what they wanted and to accept the consequences for bad choices. If you didn’t study for a test and got a failing grade no parent went charging down to the school to blame the teacher and demand the grade be fixed or that their “little darling” be allowed to redo the assignment. To make the situation even worse it seems today as though every other child is diagnosed with a learning disorder. This takes a way from the students who truly have one and just allows these other students and their parents to have one more excuse for their poor grades and actions. In the ‘good old days’ parents understood that their job was to prepare their children to become contributing members of society. Today I see parents setting their children up for failure and that is truly sad. In this case I believe the ‘good old days’ definitely come out on top and that we need to get back to that mentality.

We need to be realistic when we look back on how life was decades ago. We can certainly learn and grow from what was in the past but wearing rose colored glasses as we look back isn’t productive.

Notre Dame – Just A Building?

I have read a lot of people express that Notre Dame is just a building and all the money to fix it could be used in better ways. Over a billion dollars has been donated to help restore the cathedral. That tells me it is more than just a building to a lot of people.

I do not believe that Notre Dame is just a building and I will explain why I feel this way. Years ago I read that a true sign of faith is to plant a tree even though you know you will never sit under it’s branches. That is how I see a cathedral like Notre Dame. It took over 200 years to build it. It was built to the glory of God. Generations of men worked on it because they loved God and yet they worked day after day and year after year knowing they would never see it completed. I don’t know anyone who does that today.

It is obvious that life today is far superior to life back then. This means we have the opportunity to do many things to the glory of God such as missionary work, and supporting organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse to name two but we don’t do anything on the level of Notre Dame. In this modern, fast moving world most of us suffer from some amount of ‘immediate gratification’ syndrome. In our work and even our everyday lives we look for the most expedient, efficient and inexpensive way to complete any task. A new building involves all kinds of bids and sadly often goes to the lowest bidder. It is hard to imagine any building built today lasting 850 years.

We need to remember that at this time there was a belief in God and all he can do in our lives that sadly we don’t see anymore. We have way too much faith in science. Now, don’t think I am against science. It is thanks to science that we have the medical breakthroughs that allow us to live healthier and happier lives. It is why we have the technology that allows us to fly, communicate in the blink of an eye, watch TV and on and on. However, too many people have forgotten the Creator and worship the creations instead. Cell phones are a must in today’s fast paced world yet they have become a downfall for our society interacting with each other. This of course is a balance issue but again all propagated by science. The Bible is clear on the importance of God’s people interacting with each other so I am pretty sure He is not pleased with how we are using some of the technology we have today. I only need say the word “computers” and we all know the good and bad that they can open up to users.

Notre Dame stands for all, that today is not, when it comes to a relationship with God. People needed him in a more visceral way back then. Life was so fragile that the slightest cut could lead to sepsis and boom your dead! The life expectancy at the time the Cathedral was built was 31 years for a male. If he lived to be 20 he might get make it to 45 and if he lived to be 30 he might see the 50’s. Yet, despite knowing they probably wouldn’t live long, hundreds of men worked tirelessly so that one day a building, unlike any other, would stand to honor God.

No, Notre Dame is not just another building. My prayer is that the people of France will remember why it was built. The country has become more and more secular to the point where Christianity is just another word in their lexicon. I hope they will look at those incredible stained glass windows and remember that they are not just beautiful but that they represent an event from the Bible. We need to remember that when the Cathedral was being built Bibles were hand written so only the very rich could ever hope to own one. Add to that the fact that only a small percentage of the population was literate and able to read the Bible. Yet, and I can’t stress this enough, men worked tirelessly for 200 years to build Notre Dame and all for the glory of God!

Today approximately 63% of the French people claim to be Christians but only about 5% actually attend church or have their faith dictate their life decisions. Thus, most people consider France to be a secular country. I pray that this tragic event will lead the French people back to God as they remember why this incredible piece of architecture was built.
